History of Times Square

Throughout the years, Times Square has become an iconic place in visual culture. In most instances, billboards are large structures that can be viewed often as unattractive, but in Times Square they are celebrated as a major part of the architecture and of the place. Times Square first became well-known in the 1920's as a thriving entertainment center full of bright lights and spectacular signs. Unfortunately, the area started to diminish in 1930's and became a place full of drugs and crime. The 1980's brought redevelopment and pushed Times Square closer to the type of place that it is today. Now full of bright lights and overdecorated with gaudy and almost overbearing LED signs, it has become a must-see for New York tourists and earned the name "The Crossroads of the World".
